Summer is finally here! All the kid’s big plans can now be realized! If your children are like most, you will have at least a week or two before the newness wears off and that wonderful sense of freedom turns into boredom. That is the perfect time to break out a new set of books.

Grace and Truth Books offers three excellent collections. Each book in the Children’s Character-Building collection, the Girl’s Heritage set, and the Boy’s Heritage set are under one-hundred pages and are varied
in subject matter. Here is a sampling: Grace Raymond or The Evil and Cure of a Passionate Temper, the story of a little girl who struggles with her sin of anger and her victory over it through Christ; The Weed With an Ill Name, a tale featuring the danger of self-righteousness that is found in many children raised in a Christian home; Tampering With Temptation, a collection of short stories that will have children recognizing themselves and examining their true character; Godliness is Great Gain, a collection of six stories of people who walked in integrity before the Lord and the resultant blessings they received. This is just a taste of the subject matter found in these collections.

So, turn off the TV, hide the video games and gather those “precious treasures” around you and read good, spiritually-based stories. I guarantee that you will be able to use these books as tools to help keep your children’s minds on the right things all through the summer. Although these books will have the most appeal to those less than twelve years of age, there are many other selections to be found at this web site. They are all
available at: www.graceandtruthbooks.com

Wives of the Signers

Justifiably a lot of books have been written concerning our patriotic forefathers. We owe a great debt of gratitude to those courageous men who laid the foundation for the freedoms enjoyed today. What we fail to realize is that behind many of these men were wives that joined the challenge of starting a new nation. Wives of the Signers, a Wall Builders publication, presents a record of these great American women. It cost something to be a signer of the Constitution. There was no pomp and circumstance surrounding these men. The moment they put their signature to the document, they were marked for ridicule, hatred, and threats. This trouble followed not only them, personally, but their families would suffer, also. Imagine the horror of your husband being sought after as an outlaw, being forced to flee one’s home, living in distrust of everyone, and all under a cloud of impending imprisonment!

I found it thought-provoking to get a glimpse into these women’s lives. These were women who accepted their position in the family with no sense of anonymity. There were no “Women’s Libbers” in the group. They took their places supporting their husbands and caring for (more times than not) a large number of children. These women were true “helpmeets”; something that is becoming more and more absent in modern marriages. Today it is no surprise when the woman is involved in public service with the husband’s support. Reading this book, one will see that we have it a bit backwards, today. Just look at the country that was birthed by these men and women while holding to the position in which God placed them. A very risky surgery is the only answer. The surgeon has explained all the clinical procedures and now you are going into “overload” trying to sort out all the implications. The surgeon stands and walks over to your chair. He kneels down beside you and asks a most unexpected question. “Do you mind if I pray for you?”

Any Christian would welcome the thought of their surgeon being a man of prayer. But as David Levy, author of Gray Matter, has experienced, not all people are receptive to his offer. Reactions to his offer range from skepticism to hostility.

Dr. Levy wasn’t always so prayerfully inclined. His life began as a son of a Sephardic Jew (by birth), who had accepted Jesus as the Jewish Messiah. This decision had ostracized his father from the Jewish community. Being raised as an Orthodox Jew, Dr. Levy knew little of his heritage. His father didn’t want David to face the same persecution that he had experienced. David didn’t always want to be a neurosurgeon. When working as an auto mechanic he had dreams of an acting career. His interest in the medical field was aroused by a friend who was taking the MACT (Medical College Admissions Test). David was captivated with the thought of repairing a “machine” as complex as the human body. “If I can fix cars, I can fix people.” Two years later he was admitted to medical school as the youngest in his class. (20 years old)

Medical school changed David’s perspective concerning his spiritual life. He was suddenly in the company of many young people (1/3 of the class) with Jewish heritages. All he had believed about Jesus was no longer relevant. Years of this thought line took its toll. He was learning that the power to save lives was in his own hands. Sadly, David became caught up in the glamour of his profession. His life as a neurosurgeon was, in
his words, “fast and entertaining, heroic and challenging.” It was at the height of David’s success that God began to speak to him. He began to channel his energy in a different direction: getting to know God.

God worked in David’s heart to see people in a new way, more selflessly than before. He began to be impressed to pray for patients, not just in a personal, secret way; but openly with them before him. He had no idea the effectiveness this would have.

Gray Matter continues with chapter after chapter of specific cases in Dr. Levy’s practice and how he instituted God, faith and the power of prayer in each.

This book is not meant to promote any particular belief system. It opens one’s eyes to the gap between science and spirituality. One will realize that there is so much power in prayer and forgiveness. Much of today’s illnesses could be eradicated if we would embrace that fact.

Do not get bogged down in the clinical details contained in each case. The second blog column I wrote was reviewing one of Mr. Alcorn’s masterpieces.

Though written in an altogether different genre than that of Safely Home (for previous review click here), three closely related books, Deadline, Dominion, and Deception are just as excellent. Deadline opens with a car crash that ultimately involves the central characters of all three books. This murder-mystery revolves around an award-winning journalist, Jake Woods, and his investigation of that crash. His exploration plunges him into a deeper search; one for the meaning of his own existence.

Dominion revolves around the central character, Clarence Abernathy. This is my favorite. Clarence’s quest to seek revenge for two murders leads him into the world of inner-city gangs and racial conflict. The character gives a realistic insight into racial conflict in America. It is written in such an accurate way that Mr. Alcorn has received many letters from readers who assume he is African American. (Which he is not.)

The third related book, Deception, uses the rough-around-the-edges homicide detective, Ollie Chandler as its protagonist. Corruption, political tension, and spiritual struggle make Ollie’s investigation into the murder of a professor a time for introspection. The murderer is someone in the police department and to make matters worse, Ollie can’t remember where he was at the time of the homicide. Could it be Ollie, himself who is guilty of this crime?

All Alcorn’s books have a unique feature that I love. At some point there is a view of the events unfolding on earth as seen by those in heaven. The reader will be provoked to think about the “so great a cloud of witnesses.”

If you are one who likes books about contemporary investigations yet find that most in this style are too coarse with bad language and explicit sexual content, you will be pleased with the three “D’s”. (as I refer to them ) You will also be pleasantly surprised with their spiritual side.

These books have an appeal to Christian men as well as women. For those who love to read, you’ll want to add these great books to your library. You can purchase Randy Alcorn's books here.

Grace Abounding to the Chief of Sinners

Most Christians are familiar with John Bunyan’s famous book, Pilgrim’s Progress. It is required reading for Christian School students. Mr. Bunyan wrote other books, one of which I just found. Grace Abounding to the Chief of Sinners was written from his jail cell in 1666. It is the story of Bunyan’s conversion told with stark honesty. He relates the evil habits of his youth, the temptations he struggled with after his conversion, and the mercies, comforts and deliverances he received at the hand of God. There are distinct sections that deal with different aspects of his life: the questions and misconceptions that plagued his soul; his call to be a preacher; the perils he found in preaching; and the years he spent in prison. There is an interesting section relating a sort of transcript of the court proceedings he went through. Mr. Bunyan was not jailed for what he preached but for the fact that he preached at all! He wasn’t sanctioned by the church.

Bunyan was a true man of God and patterned everything he did to what he saw in the Word of God. He felt it was his calling to proclaim to others what Christ had done for him. “Oh! That they who have heard me speak this day did but see as I do, what sin , death, hell and the curse of God is, and also what the grace , and love and mercy of God is, through Christ, to men in such a case as they are, who are yet estranged from Him. And indeed, I did often say in my heart before the Lord, that if to be hanged up presently before their eyes, would be a means to awaken them, and confirm them in the truth, I gladly should be contented.”

His life bore out the truth of his words. Though he was never hanged, he never faltered in his commitment. Bunyan listed seven abominations that he saw as traps to his very soul. They are reminders very much worth writing down as warnings in our own life.

One quote from the book that I wrote down to meditate on (I wrote many), shows Bunyan’s understanding of salvation: “I also saw moreover, that it was not my good frame of heart that made my righteousness better, nor yet my bad frame that made my righteousness worse; for my righteousness was Jesus Christ Himself, The same yesterday, today, and forever, Hebrews 13:8

The book ends with a continuation written by a friend of Bunyan’s. It tells how he lived out the final years of his life after his release from prison. This book is not your run-of-the-mill autobiography! Bunyan’s life is a devotional study.

I found this book when looking for free books to apply to my Kindle (If you do not have a Kindle, you can read Kindle books on your computer or phone - for information - click here). It is free! Do I have to learn a foreign language to be able to understand what my child is texting? Should my child have a laptop? What about Facebook? Should teens really be on it? These are not just questions for conservative, Christian parents. This age of technology and instant communication has created new questions in every parent’s mind.

What is a parent to do? How can these challenges be faced?

Melissa Trevathan and Sissy Goff hear these questions and comments on a daily basis at their counseling office and at ministry events. In their book, Modern Parents, Vintage Values: Instilling Character in Today’s Kids, one can find discussions about specific issues facing kids today and how parents can help them deal with them.

When it comes to the new technology readily available, we as parents need to learn the secret language that preteens and teens use today. If you don’t know that “POS” stands for “Parents over shoulder” or that “PAW” stands for “Parents are watching”, you need this book. The dangers our kids face with communication always at their fingertips is something parents need to be aware of. This book is full of wisdom, warnings, and wake-up calls.

The authors believe that in spite of living in a culture that wars against good parenting, children can still be instilled with a quality value system. They focus on nine values that are foundational for the development of character in children: kindness, integrity, manners, compassion, forgiveness, responsibility, gratitude, patience and confidence.

Parents need to set standards to protect their homes before it is too late. It is said: “Being forewarned is to be forearmed.” This book can be a great help for parents in reaching that goal.

Sometimes we all need a wake-up call! This book can be just that! You can purchase Modern Parents, Vintage Values: Instilling Character in Today's Kids here.

Great Reads For Christmas Part 2

It is not too late to order books to give as Christmas gifts. Last month a set for young people was highlighted. This month's selections will round out ideas for the rest of the family.

The ever-popular Christian fiction genre offers an exceptional two volume set. Francine Rivers has hit the mark again with Marta's Legacy. The first volume, Her Mother's Hope, sets the stage for a journey from the beginning of the 20th century to present day in the second volume, Her Daughter's Dream. Being based on Francine's own family history makes the characters very realistic. As the reader you may identify with individual characters: Marta, as she stubbornly sets off to America from Switzerland to escape an abusive, tyrannical father; or her daughter Hildemara, as she strives to reach the standards set for her yet always falling short of her mother's expectations. Both books weave a tale of family curses, how one generation has an effect on the future ones and how that vicious circle can and should be broken. All Christian women will enjoy these books.

For the men on your list I suggest two. For the business-minded, or public-service minded man, Donald T. Phillips has written Lincoln on Leadership. The main purpose of the book is to help men in the business world as they lead those who are subordinate to them. But this book is relevant in any leadership role, including a family. Even as an informational book about one of our most famous Presidents, this book is worth reading.

My last selection is one that I am presently reading. It's another President and another look into the trials and tribulations of his leadership role. Decision Points by George W. Bush chronicles the decisions that shaped both his personal life and his presidency. Reading his own words about his eight years as President and the consequences he faced in every decision he made gives a greater understanding of the scope of the office of a US President. So far this book is easy to read because the laid back character of the man shows through. Great gift for the men in your family!

All these books can be found at Amazon.com. Van Gelderen and his ministry five years ago when my husband attended a meeting where Bro. John Van Gelderen was speaking. Since then we have read many of his writings and have been inspired to seek for true revival personally, as well as in our church.

"A Symphony of Prayer" is a small, easily read booklet that shares the Biblically concept of corporate prayer. This does in no way dismiss the importance of personal prayer, but corporate prayer has the power to change the whole perspective of our lives, our church and our entire community. Corporate prayer meetings are so encouraging when they are truly conducted by the Holy Spirit of God. When the Holy Spirit leads someone to pray you will know immediately the Presence and power of the Holy Spirit of God, because there is nothing about it that is fleshly.

So many times when people pray in corporate prayer meetings you can hear them instructing God on some matter of concern or even "preaching to others" on something. God doesn't need our instruction. Real prayer is our petition to our Heavenly Father and it's done in great humility.

This little booklet challenged me to real, genuine prayer and I love the times when as a group, we are seeking and reaching the throne room in Heaven. We all know it and are hearts are encouraged to keep praying to our prayer answering God!

Prayer still moves the heart of God and there are still so many prayers to be answered!

This is a little book with a little price, but it can do BIG things in our life if we would get serious about the Ministry of prayer.

You can access this powerful little booklet through:

Revival Focus Press

P.O. It will change your life if you allow it. Use it in the educating of your children if you hope to see them living in a Christian nation when they are adults. Please take the challenge to read this book. You will be glad you did!

"We've Got to Get America Back to God." This song title leads one to believe that America once did belong to the Almighty. But how did we get so far from our religious heritage to the ungodly state in which we now live?

Betrayed by the Bench, by John A. Stormer, is an excellent source for finding the answer. Mr. Stormer has been involved in both the legislative and judicial levels of government for nearly four decades. He has witnessed the slow but sure turning of American government from common law to case law; man's law rather than God's law. The term is sociological jurisprudence. (Yes, you will learn some new terms!) As I read this book (less than 175 pages, including the appendix), I was appalled at the blatent disrespect that many of our government officials (namely judges) have for our Declaration of Independence and the Constitution. But just being shocked and getting angry doesn't change anything. The last chapter is titled, "What Can Be Done to Restore Godly, Constitutional Justice?" One of the ways is for American churches to be changed. That begins with you and me. A spiritual awakening is not enough. We need real revival. As Mr. Stormer states, "True revival changes people, a culture, a nation, and its politics" (pg 157).

I so thoroughly enjoyed this book! It is one of those that while reading, I would stop and go find my husband and say, "Listen to this!" Things aren’t really so different today than they were for our mothers and grandmothers. Yet the principles found in God’s Word are still applicable in all situations. Maybe if we had stuck to them in the past we wouldn’t find womanhood so hard, today.

Our pastor’s wife has taught several times from a book that gives us a beautiful picture of biblical womanhood.

On the Other Side of the Garden, by Virginia Fugate, is as applicable today as it was when written in 1992.

If you have already read this book I encourage you to go back and glean a few more principles to strengthen you as you raise your family. If you have never read it you will be enlightened as you go through each section.

Section one sets the foundation for any Christian woman in her role as wife and mother. There is a chapter on submission versus obedience; Satan’s deception that is just as subtle today as it was in the Garden of Eden; and a chapter on how influential a woman is in the home, for good and bad. The second section deals with the opposition to biblical womanhood that we face. There are vain philosophies and faulty thinking patterns out there for which many of us have fallen. The last section relates how to apply what was laid out in the first two. This is the longest section and answers many of the questions and fears that we have concerning our role in society. What about the disillusions, disappointments, and misunderstandings; the irritations, frustrations, and aggravations that come to all marriages? How does one reach a decision as to whether she should work outside the home or not?

This book is not just for the married. Those who are unmarried can learn much from Mrs. Fugate and be ahead of many of us who have fallen prey to the world’s approach to womanhood. What a blessing to begin marriage with a biblical perspective. The future of our families depends upon it. Our Pastor believes that every citizen of the United States should be required to read this book before they are allowed to vote.

I am sure all of us have heard someone say that they are a “Constitutionalist”. I am all for the Constitution. It has survived for over two-hundred years and has served our country well. I readily jump on the band-wagon with a growing number of supporters. But seriously, do any of us know much about the writers and what motivated them, what its tenets are? Do we truly grasp the miracle of it and how it changed the world? How is it that during those two-hundred years there was more progress made than in the previous 5,000? If one is interested in this, a must read is The 5,000Year Leap, Principles of Freedom 101.

This is not a book to take to the lake for an afternoon of leisure reading. It takes some concentration and contemplation to fulfill the book’s purpose: to outline the 28 Principles of Liberty and give the readers an understanding of how important it is to adhere to them if we want to continue to live peaceful, prosperous, and free lives.

I would suggest reading only one principle a day. (6 or 7 pages) There are many quotes from our Founding Fathers and some may have difficulty understanding the vernacular but it is worth the effort. To wet your appetite here are just a few principles:

A constitution should be structured to permanently protect

the people from the human frailties of their rulers.

Strong local self-government is the keystone to preserving

human freedom.

The proper role of government is to protect equal rights,

not provide equal things.

Great stuff, yet we are close to losing the very liberties that the Founding Fathers saw as critical in the development of our Constitution and thus our country. Read this book and find out what we are losing. Let it spur you into action to do what you can to preserve those liberties.

This book is also available on Audio CD and MP3 Audio book. Many have dollar signs and popularity before their eyes. Sadly, most don’t have a grasp of the truth. I am privileged to know a man who believes it is his God-given calling to proclaim the truth of the Bible not only from the pulpit but in written word.

Gordon Silcox pastored for 30 years before God called him into evangelism. His study of God’s Word and what he believes is a lack of true Christianity today has inspired him to write what he characterizes as a “treatise” titled, Authentic Christianity: the Original Historic Christian Faith.

Do not be mistaken. This book is not just some man’s opinion of what true Christianity is. There is far more Scripture in this book than there is Bro. Silcox’s words. One cannot help but examine his own Christianity once the genuine article is revealed. Is yours all about Christ? Bro. Silcox affirms that if it isn’t then it isn’t the Christianity of the Bible. The faith that was delivered to the saints of the Bible is the same faith Christians are to live out through their lives today.

Only 47 pages in its entirety, this book can be used as a devotional, for Bible-study groups, or to hand out as a tract. His use of alliteration of the chapter headings makes it precise and very memorable.

If I have peaked your interest this treasure can be obtained directly from the author at:

Authentic Christianity

P.O.Box 159

Larimore, ND 58251

USA

Going Rogue

Politics seems to have the majority of the headlines these days. Everyone has an opinion. News networks each put their own "spin" on the current issues and personalities. I find it difficult to know who and what to believe. I have come to the conclusion that reading someone's own words may be the better gauge of a person and their beliefs. That is why I read Sarah Palin's autobiography, Going Rogue.

Needless to say, it would be next to impossible to find anyone in America who does not know who this dynamic personality is. She is one of the most recognizable women in the world. I was quite entertained by her persona throughout this book. She writes with the same vibrancy and urgency that we witnessed in her speeches as the 2008 Republican Vice-Presidential running mate of John Mc Cain.

But this book is not just about a person. It takes one behind the scenes of local and national government as well; something about which many women know nothing. It is most assuredly not as glamorous as one would think.

I definitely am not endorsing Mrs. Palin for any public office in the future. My strictly biblical-based position of what a woman's role in society entails differs from hers, but I do admire her tenacity for righting the wrongs she sees.

Each of us has an opinion. I would be interested in seeing yours after you have read this book, which by the way is available just about everywhere. I checked mine out from the library and you can also purchase it here.

Why Christians Get Sick

John 10:10 states, "…I am come that they might have life, and life more abundantly." God intends that we enjoy life. III John 2 states, "…Beloved, I wish above all things that thou mayest prosper and be in health even as thy soul prospereth." He wants us to enjoy life (Malkmus, pg 99). He has provided a way for each of us to do so. The problem is that we are creatures of habit and we rely upon tradition. Girls, do you find yourself preparing meals with the attitude "If it tastes good eat it." or, "That's the way we have always done it."?

Dr. George H. Malkmus believes the verse found in Hosea 4:6, "My people are destroyed for lack of knowledge…". In his book, Why Christians Get Sick, he outlines the very knowledge we need to make dramatic changes in our health. The bottom line is that we need to separate true knowledge from beliefs and opinions (pg 25).

One must read this book with an open mind. It is hard to accept new information after a lifetime of believing one way. Each chapter covers a different aspect of our health and well-being. Some of the details are shocking: Did you know that one billion pounds of insecticides are sprayed or dusted on the food we consume each year? (1% of which actually reaches the insect it intends to destroy)(pg 28) Other aspects are quite thought provoking. Muse over the thought that we perceive the "medicine man" of some cultures as crude or primitive. Have we really advanced much further? We go to a "medical doctor" and he or she basically does the same thing: prescribes a drug (usually an unknown substance, to us) and we take it into our bodies hoping it will bring relief from the symptoms (pg 38). Many times it does, but what about the root cause?

Dr. Malkmus adeptly shows us that health cannot be restored by taking drugs to counteract the effects that our food and lifestyles have had on us. The body is self-healing when healthful practices are followed, for our Creator made them that way (pg43).

We are all breaking God's natural laws for health, but we just may not realize it. But after reading this enlightening book, it is up to us to accept God's provision (pg 99). "If ye know these things, happy are ye if ye do them." (John 13:17)

I encourage you to take the time to challenge your thinking by reading this thought provoking book. It gets more difficult to do so each month. You don't want me to waste your time with most of what is considered that genre today. So I searched my library and came up with a memorable novel that I know you will enjoy. I have read it again to refresh my memory and it was just as pleasurable the second time.

First published in 1999, Eve's Daughters, by Lynn Austin, traces four generations of women from pre-WWI Germany, to the United States in the 1980's. Broken into parts, it is written from each woman's perspective of her struggles and triumphs as well as the impact her culture has upon her, and how her decisions affected future generations.

The book opens as a woman sees her grand-daughter's marriage unravel. Maybe if she hadn't hidden the truth about her own marriage, things would be different. Will the truth about her secret really heal the hurts?

This book gives a great picture of how our choices affect those who come after us. It deals with choice of a marriage partner and then Biblical submission to that choice; the choice of serving the living God or doing one's own thing( though each character's salvation is vaguely referred to); the option of taking responsibility for actions, seeking forgiveness and letting God give a second chance.

The scenarios in this book are played out each day all around us. We need to be aware so as not to be overtaken in the same sins. As John Donne wrote, "No man is an island unto himself…" Our decisions and actions will have consequences in future generations.

Though it deals with hard subjects, this book is in no way tedious. Once you start it… you will not be able to put it down. It and other novels by the same author are available at Amazon.com

Jesus, M.D.

My good friend and fellow blogger, Eleanor, gave me a book to read this month. I'm not sure if she read it first and then felt it was worthy of sharing but I'm sure glad she sent it my way!

Jesus, M.D. is written by David Stevens with Greg Lewis. For eleven years Mr. Stevens served as a medical missionary in Kenya. Those years gave him a perspective concerning Jesus as the "Great Physician" that most of us have never realized. We know He is the ultimate doctor, but we may never have seen how He wants us to bring His healing touch to our corner of the world.

Each of the twelve chapters show a different spiritual principle behind Jesus' healings and how we can apply those same principles as we follow God's will for our lives concerning personal evangelism. One does not have to be in the medical field to understand the concepts revealed.

Mr. Steven's first-hand stories of the medical dilemmas he has encountered makes this a very, interesting and thought-provoking book. Time after time I just had to stop reading and contemplate a facet of Christ's healing ministry that went far beyond the physical to the spiritual. I realized that I could and should be mirroring Him in my commission to reach the lost. I have a new vision as to how Christ wants me to approach people about their sin problem and how to show them that He has all the answers.

This is truly a must read book. I know that you will enjoy it as much as I did. Thank-you, Eleanor for the blessing.

You can purchase Jesus, M.D. for yourself or a friend here at Amazon.com.

More Great Picks for Men

The Art of Virtue by Benjamin Franklin

Wanting to attain perfection was a goal in Franklin’s life. As we all have found, he realized it was impossible to reach that goal. Not to be daunted though, he believed that we should all strive to live virtuous lives. He wrote his thoughts on this matter as guiding principles for our lives. Example: “There is no happiness but in a virtuous and self-approving conduct.” This is a fairly short book of less than three-hundred pages.

You can purchase this at Amazon.com

E.M. Sometimes that can be very difficult. Yes, there are a lot of "self-help" books out there. Everyone has an opinion on how to get ahead in this world. But getting their lives in order through God's precepts is the best help any father can get. What better way can that be done than by immersing oneself in God's Word and literature that gives God the glory!

When Bro. Curtman was here as the speaker for the Fall Revival, he mentioned a few books that would be an asset to any library I have added some that would also be a blessing to Dad this Christmas (or anytime, for that matter). They are listed in order of copyright, not worth, beginning with the oldest.

I will share only three this month:

JOSEPHUS- For those whose interest lies in the historical aspect of the Bible. One will look at Scripture in a whole new way when one understands the time in which it was written.

You can purchase Josephus: The Complete Works on Amazon here
.

SENECA'S Moral Essays-This is a collection of short essays. Some of the titles are:

"On the Reasons for Withdrawal from the World"; "On Practicing What You Preach"; "On Allegiance to Virtue". I particularly like reading some of his famous quotes such as, "If virtue precede us every step will be safe."

You can purchase Seneca: Moral Essays from Amazon.com

MATTHEW HENRY'S The Quest for Meekness and Quietness of Spirit- This book must be read in small portions and meditated upon to experience it to its fullest. A quote from Henry, "Next to the beauty of holiness, which is the soul's agreement with God, is the beauty of meekness, which is the soul's agreement with itself. Behold how good it is for the powers of the soul to dwell in unity, the reason knowing how to rule the affections, at the same time knowing how to obey." Wow, how good is that!

You can purchase The Quest for Meekness and Quietness of Spirit from Amazon.com

Take some time to check out these first three book samplings. There are a lot to choose from but not all are appropriate for our children. We want to get them off to a good start on a lifetime of reading. Here are a few that I recommend.

For ages 8-10

3 Cousins Mysteries by Elspeth Campbell Murphy

They are available in three categories: The Ten Commandment Series (10 books); The Detective Club (20 books); and The Beatitude Mysteries (8 books). As evident, each book bases its mystery on a Biblical principle. These are very short stories and will hold the readers interest to the end.

To Purchase: Amazon

For ages 9-14

Nathan Riggins Western Adventure Series by Stephen Bly

There are six books in this series, all based upon the adventures of a boy in Old Nevada and the incidents that happen to him as he grows up and the lessons that God teaches him through each one. They are filled with the amusing high jinks of children growing up in the Wild West.

To Purchase: Amazon

For the Sports Minded ages 10-16

Sigmund Brouwer’s Sports Mystery Series

Books 1-5 relate stories about, soccer, football, basketball, stock-car racing, and baseball. These examine the moral dilemmas that young people face combined with mystery and humor. These are mainly for the boys but I enjoyed them when I read them.

To Purchase: Amazon or Thomas Nelson

For girls 16 and up

Elsie Dinsmore by Martha Finley

There are 28 books in an entire set. Since this series was written over 100 years ago one can expect them to lean heavily on good family values. Elsie grows older in each successive book starting as a very young girl through becoming a grandmother.

To Purchase: Amazon or Vision Forum (sometimes Vision Forum will put the whole set at 50% off so watch for those times)

For both boys and girls 16 and older

The Kingdom Series by Chuck Black

This author lives in our own Williston, North Dakota. He has written an allegory of Bible events in a six book series. Though by no means extensive these books take some key themes of the Bible and set them in medieval times with knights, swords and dragons. Without using sorcery the author depicts the fight of good over evil with true good winning out in the end.

To Purchase: Lamp Lighter Publishing

As our children are bombarded with television and video games it gets harder and harder to entice them with a book. The gift of a book is an age old tradition in all cultures. We can continue this tradition in our families by searching out what is available and being discerning in our purchases. I will try to have more selections next month.

Mrs. C.H. Spurgeon, by Charles Ray, is only one hundred-twenty pages long, but what a surprise gift it was for me to read.

When I saw that it was first written in 1903, I was prepared for a trite yet over-indulgent description of a pious woman who could have little in common with me in today’s world. She lived in the 1800’s and was a famous pastor’s wife, for goodness sake. What could I learn from her? But oh, was I mistaken!

Every woman can learn from Mrs. Spurgeon’s pilgrimage beginning with a girlhood in London, to a marriage to one considered by many to be the greatest preacher ever to fill a pulpit, and all the responsibilities that came with that position. C.H. Spurgeon was a remarkable man and his “soul-mate” needed to be just as extraordinary.

Where do we ever get the idea that a pastor and his wife’s relationship has to be any different than our own? The Spurgeon’s lives illustrate beautifully what a marriage should be and the sacrifices that each should be willing to endure to make it so. It is not just for those in the ministry.

I also learned of the industrious endeavors of this selfless woman. Her founding of the “Book Fund” supplied countless books and sermon copies to those pastors who were not able to afford them personally. She was an example of the Proverbs 31 woman.

The things that touched me the most were the “love letters” written by Mr. Spurgeon to his wife during their many periods of separation and Mrs. Spurgeon’s journal entries of her thoughts toward him Both were filled with the purest of thoughts toward each other. “Dear purchase of a Saviour’s blood, you are to me a Saviour’s gift, and my heart is full to overflowing with the thought of such continued goodness.” (C.H. Spurgeon to Susannah before their marriage.) Oh, that our husbands could say the same about us!

This is a great book for all women; young, old, married, single, pastor’s wives or not. The reader will come away with a renewed spirit of respect, servitude, and love for the spouse that God has given them.

You may purchase this book at Amazon.com.

<link rel='alternate' type='text/html' href='http://ntbcgoodreads.blogspot.com/2009/09/mrs-ch-spurgeon.html' title='Mrs. C.H. Maybe it is that distance that has kept me from whole-heartedly praying for persecuted saints. “It won’t happen here.” But how long will it be until full-fledged persecution is in our country? It is knocking on our backdoor today.

I know that I am not the only one who has allowed himself to dismiss stories of Christian persecution as hype or over-kill. We spoiled Americans cannot fathom that these atrocities could be true. The author, Elwood McQuaid has lots to say about why we feel this way and what can be done to change how we perceive persecution. His book is filled with accounts of the brutal affliction of believers, reasons why American Christians are silent, and steps we as individuals can take to quench this intolerance.

I have asked forgiveness for closing my eyes and ears to this encroaching obstacle to my walk with Christ. Yes, we as Americans are blessed with freedom of religion but we must not forget that we have brothers and sisters in Christ that are not as privileged. This book showed how it affects all of us.

Take the time to find this book and meditate on its message.

You can purchase this book here.

Good Reads for Boys (and their parents)

Every generation is beset with trials and tribulations. There is economic strife, wars and rumors of wars, a break-down of families and a slow but sure de-valuation of human life. It seems that the 21st century is more challenging because of its technological overload and an overt push toward individualism: “Every way of a man is right in his own eyes…” (Proverbs 21:2)

This generation of young men may have different challenges than those preceding them but they all have had the same infallible source to turn to for answers. God’s Word is timeless. The principles laid out in its pages will help any young man to meet every challenge in life.

This generation has the responsibility to teach and encourage the next to turn to those pages. Our young men will be the ones to take up the reins when we have done our time in the driver’s seat. It has been the same for every generation.

J. C. Ryle died in 1900, yet his book, Thoughts for Young Men is most contemporary. This small yet powerful book “addresses the greatest challenges in a young man’s life”. I so wish I had obtained a copy of it when my boys were growing up.

The main sections of the book discuss the reasons for exhorting young men, dangers they will encounter, general counsels to them, and special rules for them. Each is liberally sprinkled with Scripture to backup what is written.

“What young men will be in all probability, depends upon what they are now, and they seem to forget this.” (Ryle, pg 8) Too many plan on serving God “someday”. The world tells them it is natural and alright to sow their wild oats. But as Ryle points out, it is no easy matter to turn to God whenever one pleases. Proverbs 27:1 states, “Boast not thyself of tomorrow; for thou knowest not what a day may bring forth.” One must have an abiding relationship with Christ through repentance and faith.

Young men need to realize this as early as possible if they expect to meet the challenges in life.
Mr. Ryle was greatly burdened for young men and poured out his heart for them on every page. Every Christian home that has boys in it should get a copy of this eighty-nine page book. It should be read by parents and young men alike. It is of the utmost importance to raise boys to be strong men of God. The future of our families and our country depend upon it.

If you would like to purchase this book, you can purchase it through Vision Forum here.

The Shack

This month’s Good Reads is not a recommendation! THIS IS A WARNING!

I have noticed a strange thing concerning today’s “Christian” literature. The more popular a selection is with the public or the more it is held up as comparable to the great Christian works such as Pilgrim’s Progress by the critics, the more I find doctrine that falls short of what is found in Scripture. The Shack by William Paul Young is one such work that has received a lot of air time.

The author was featured on “Good Morning, America” and the Internet is full of blogs discussing the book’s merits. Though I shed a tear or two as I read selected parts of this fiction book to my husband and we were able to discuss the heart-rending sections, there were too many areas where the line was crossed between metaphor and blasphemy.

Contrary to the rendering in this book, God never appears as a woman in all of Scripture. Scripture is plenteous with masculine pronouns when referring to God. I am wondering if the “god” of The Shack, was to appeal to the proponents of being “politically correct”. That is just one of the many things that true Bible-believing Christians should find disturbing in the book.

Another and more objectionable issue is a quote from “Papa” (God), “I don’t need to punish people for sin. Sin is its own punishment, devouring you from the inside. It is not my purpose to punish it; it is my joy to cure it.” Any Bible reader knows that this is not found in Scripture. Death is the punishment for sin. Romans 6:23 states, “For the wages of sin is death; but the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord.”

Throughout this book one will find God’s authority coming into question, Christ as our example being refuted, and repentance being watered down to just “…giving up your ways of power and manipulation…” (Scripture teaches that there is more to salvation than just turning over a new leaf.)

Bottom line is that this book falls into the perimeters of the humanistic movement. Society is calling for a change. There are no longer any absolutes. People no longer take the Bible as the foundation for the Christian faith. Each one believes what they are comfortable with. The move toward a universal church needs a universal “god”. The Bible states in II Timothy 4:3, “For the time will come when they will not endure sound doctrine; but after their own lusts shall they heap to themselves teachers having itching ears.” The Shack exemplifies this truth. We as Christians need to be discerning in all that we read. Be forewarned of the subtlety of this book.

A Shepherd Looks At Psalm 23

A shepherd and his sheep…this conjures up a mental picture of a calm pasture, a flock of genteel, contented sheep and an overseer who wiles away his time watching over the flock by reading or playing soothing music. What an idyllic portrait! But there is much more to this characterization than meets the eye. Most of us have no idea what it necessitates to be a shepherd or what the “personality” of a sheep entails. But it would be advantageous to find out since the Bible refers to Christians as sheep and Jesus Christ as our Shepherd.

I can’t think of any book that enlightens the reader to this subject as well as A Shepherd Looks at Psalm 23, by Phillip Keller. Being raised in East Africa where the culture is still steeped in the traditions that the Psalmist knew, allows the author to give us a line by line exposition of the Psalm that manifests the nature of the shepherd and his flock. One sees the helplessness of the sheep without the shepherd and the unselfish love that the shepherd has for the (His) sheep. Sure, most of us can recite the 23rd Psalm, but after reading this book one will truly understand the Shepherd-sheep relationship as never before.

This short easy to read gem has been re-printed many times and is readily available. I would suggest that one looks for an older copy so as to be sure that the King James Version is used. Whether read for your own devotions or used in family devotions one can’t help but come away with a greater admiration and affection for the Shepherd of the soul.

You can purchase the book here.

Character Makes A Difference

We Americans have just participated in a historic Presidential election. It was a heartily fought campaign with many issues on both sides. We voters had the responsibility of choosing from a number of candidates beginning with the Primary Elections. Only time will reveal whether the best one for the job was elected.

One way to help in our discernment when choosing candidates is to read material written by the candidates, themselves. I just finished one such book and wish I had done so earlier.

Character Makes a Difference by Mike Huckabee, was thoroughly informative and enjoyable. I already knew he seemed a cut above the rest, but after reading his short book (175 pages before an Appendix of Speeches); I saw that there are still men in places of authority that put a premium on Godly character.

Originally published as Character Is the Issue in 1997, the book enlightened me to some of Huckabee’s political background as a Baptist pastor and later as the governor of Arkansas. Of course, no man is perfect, and one may have some different views on some political issues but every Christian should heartily agree with Mr. Huckabee’s estimation that Godly character should play the primary role in how man conducts himself.

The best way to articulate this is to include some quotes from the book.

                                            On the Ten Commandments:

“The law reveals the depth of God’s character, and it also reveals our lack of character. Laws are a giant mirror reflecting not only what is but projecting what ought to be, giving us the standard against which to compare our lives.” (pg 77)

On legalism and liberalism

“One of the few things I detest more than liberalism is legalism. I think both are cancers to the Christian faith-liberalism because it doesn’t believe anything, and legalism because it restricts us only to the things we can live up to. Liberalism makes God seem so commonplace that He becomes meaningless, while legalism makes God so small that He becomes insignificant. The negative aspect of a legalistic worldview is that you create what becomes your own Christian faith. It’s really a set of do’s and don’ts that allow someone to judge whether others are good people or good Christians. The problem is we’re always going to create a list we can live up to, which means we’re not living up to the standards of Jesus Christ.” (pg 84)

On the ultimate question for society:

“How did we move in one generation from a society with a shared, confident sense of right to a society of relativism and moral decay? If any force is going to overcome a free, prosperous country like America, it won’t happen all at one. America has a solid foundation of liberty, personal dignity, and opportunity… The only way to destroy something with that kind of foundation is to chip away at it, one value at a time. Take away its heart and essence. Bring doubt to what used to be a confidence, denial to what used to be faith, death to what was life. I think that is what has happened.” (pg 109)

I could go on and on but then no one would pick up the book and read it for themselves. Mr. Huckabee ends his book with a paragraph pertaining to a candle in the darkness. Paraphrasing, it states that a Christian’s spiritual light-a light of integrity, character and a God-centered world view-is just as invincible as a candle in a dark room. “We live in a dark spiritual age-all the more reason for you to hold your candle high and hold it out to others! The darker the world gets, the brighter your light will shine.

One never knows if the Huckabee name will be seen on a ballot in the future but I am encouraged to look for men with the same view of the importance of character as found in this excellent book.

To purchase this book, click here.

"Sir Gibbie"

I re-read a book I read in the past, for this month’s blog. It was as endearing this time as the first time I read it. Sir Gibbie, originally written by the Scottish storyteller, George Macdonald, is the perfect book for families to read together. It is the story of a little boy growing up in poverty whose character shines through every mistreatment he endures. Gibbie is orphaned and has to fend for himself, despite his lack of education and communication skills. The disparity between those who follow Christ and those who are self-consumed is exposed in the people Gibbie meets. One can use this book to teach, among other things, the principle of loving thy neighbor as thyself.

The copy of Sir Gibbie that I read was edited by Kathryn Lindskoog. She changed some out-dated words and shortened some of the chapters from Mr. Macdonald’s original, yet preserved the integrity of the story. I have since found out that there is a sequel to Sir Gibbie that continues the story of his best friend. Maybe I will get to read it for next month’s blog!
If you like George Macdonald’s writing, Michael Phillips, (a well-known Christian author) has edited many of his originals. They are easy to find in any library.

I hope that you are enjoying the plethora of good books that are out there. Reading is such a pleasure; one that everyone should take advantage of. Just keep in mind that there is no book like God’s Book--- the Bible.

You can purchase Sir Gibbie here.

"The Teenage Years of Jesus Christ"

Much has been said and written about the teenage years. Granted they can be a very trying time of life for young people as well as for their parents. But it doesn’t have to be that way. Did you ever stop and think about the fact, that Jesus was a teen for six years of His life? Hebrews 4:15b says that “He was in all points tempted like as we are, yet without sin”. How did He do it? Can the same principles that Christ lived by, work for teens today? Jerry L. Ross believes so and has written a great little book titled: The Teenage Years of Jesus Christ, the Ultimate Pattern for Teenagers Today.

The entire concept is based upon what we know of Christ’s teenage years as found in the Bible. Luke 2:52 clearly states, “And Jesus increased in wisdom and stature, and in favour with God and man.” Mr. Ross expounds on each aspect of that verse in short, concise chapters. Each chapter is filled with Scripture to support the principle priority for every teen’s life: the pursuit of wisdom.

There are chapters on remaining subject to parents and learning a wage-earning skill. My favorite section concerned God’s will in marriage for the teen. The how, when, and where questions were beautifully answered.

As with any book written by man, there is many times that something the author writes may not follow an independent, fundamental Christian’s belief. Mr. Ross unerringly believes that teens need to be saved to have success in patterning their lives after Christ’s, but just admitting one is a sinner in need of salvation, does not equate the repentance and sorrow over sin, that is crucial in order to be born-again. Mr. Ross’s pattern prayer given in the book, leaves this crucial point out. Being aware of that takes nothing away from the worth of this book.

The world bombards teens with a philosophy of “experience all you can”. There is much out there to lead them down the wrong path. But remember, contrary to the world’s thinking, young people should be maturing during their teens to prepare them for the major decisions that will be made immediately after the teen years. Our job as parents is to do everything possible to see to it that our children’s hearts and minds are molded to the image of Christ (Ross, pg. 105).

I was impressed by the Mr. Ross’s coverage of the subject and the plethora of Scripture that he used to get his point across. One is only arguing with God when they disagree. It is a great book for Christian School teachers, youth group leaders or for family devotions. But don’t take my word for it. See for yourself. This book is available through our church secretary for the ladies of our church or it can be ordered at Book Heaven. The period between 1730 and the 1850’s was just such a time. A Great Awakening swept through America and kindled a flame of revival. The now late Bill Bright and Jack Cavanaugh authored a set of historical fiction books that give an absorbing account of the archetype of men that God used to expedite this flame. The four books, Proof, Fire, Storm, and Fury draw the reader into situations that are still current.

Proof is a courtroom drama where “proof” of the Holy Spirit’s existence is litigated. The corruption of a legal system that does not have God as the final authority and the evil of secret societies paint a picture of not only how the world was in the 1700’s but of the 21st century.

Fire, my favorite, depicts a town in the grips of evil and a man walking so close to the Holy Spirit that he becomes physically ill when he returns after a seven year absence to be the pastor of the local church. Would God that there be men so burdened today! An appearance by Jonathan Edwards and George Whitefield make us audience to the powerful preaching of that day.

Storm is filled with political undertones and details the squelching of a spiritual revival on a college campus. A Yale student is personally and academically attacked for his faith. Sound strangely familiar?

A young man’s escape from a strained relationship with his pastor uncle who raised him and ultimately his flight from the Lord, is the vehicle used in Fury to show the discouragement that comes from battling the Holy Spirit and the power that comes from deep, abiding faith. Charles Finney’s preaching that the Holy Spirit is the “unrelenting hound of Heaven”, is instrumental in reaching the young man. It is a story of the spiritual journey of a bitter skeptic; a journey that many are on today.

The last three books all have a family bloodline carried out in them so reading them in chronological order is suggested. I hope you will be as blessed by these books as I was. May there be a “Great Awakening” in your heart.

To find these books, click on the following books for the corresponding webpage with the cheapest prices to be found on the internet.

Proof

Fire

Storm

Fury

1776

“These are times that try men’s souls.” Thomas Paine wrote these words in his collections of essays, The Crisis. He was speaking of the decisive time in America’s history when brave men and women fought for independence. Anyone interested in that part of our heritage will love David McCullough’s book, 1776. Covering the events between the summer of 1775 and the winter of 1776-77, Mr. McCullough immerses the reader into the lives of the leaders and lesser-known men who played pivotal roles in the fight for American independence. Trying to be fair to both sides, he expertly covers the political debates in both London and the colonies. Mr. McCullough gives us a highly readable chronicle of how George Washington with an army of ragtime farmers and merchants defeated the world’s greatest empire. Men like Nathaniel Greene, a Quaker, and Henry Knox, a bookseller, became American patriots. It is a story of women, such as Molly Corbin, who like many wives, accompanied her husband to battle. When her husband was killed she continued to load and fire canon until she too was hit. The book is also a picture of General George Washington, who through suffering, determination, and ingenuity, and despite overwhelming odds, led his army to victory. It is he who said, “Perseverance and spirit have done wonders in all ages.” It is that very perseverance that we need to make applicable to our lives. Thomas Paine did not know how prophetic his words were. We are in no less trying times today. We need that same spirit the men and women of 1776 had if we intend to be as victorious. I encourage all to get this book for someone on their Christmas list. (And do not forget one for yourself!) 1776 will inspire us to take a stand to prevent the loss of what our forefathers so bravely won for us.

Safely Home

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_oOS6kEGuRMw/SOV7E3wB69I/AAAAAAAAAe0/BLXA6-Zvcp8/s320/safelyhome_-_good_reads.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5252739864012647378" />
We Christians in America are so blessed! We have more, do more, and complain more than any other nation of people.. When was the last time you had to hide your one and only Bible and go to church in the secrecy of night for fear of being jailed? What will you do if there comes a time in America where the above scenario is commonplace?

Though a fiction book, Safely Home, by Randy Alcorn, gives us a modern day picture of the persecution of the saints in China. Through it, one can catch a glimpse of what true persecution consists of. II Timothy 3:12 says, "Yea, and all that will live godly in Christ Jesus shall suffer persecution." As born-again Christians, we are not promised an easy life, but an eternal one. Make sure you have a box of tissues at your side when reading this book. May you come away as I did, praising God for where He has placed you and praying more earnestly for those who suffer for Christ’s sake.

This book can open our eyes and make us see what the veritable Christian life is all about.

Books of Character for Young Girls

Reading good books has to be one of the greatest pleasures in life. There are many from which to choose but the greatest fulfillment comes from reading a book that not only entertains but one that has life lessons intertwined in it pages. I have always wanted the books that my children read to be those that reinforced the character I tried to instill into them. I found three such books this summer.

Avery Hitch wrote her first book, “Be Ye Thankful” at the age of fifteen. Two more, “Journey to the Cross” (sequel to the first) and “A Penny Parcel” followed in the next couple of years. Anyone with girls aged twelve and above will be blessed by reading how the young people in the books earn valuable, spiritual lessons. I was particularly impressed with, “A Journey to the Cross”. It deals with the issue of how submission to our Heavenly Father begins with submission to an earthly father. Do not let the “Little House on the Prairie” flavor of the books throw you. They have tremendous lessons to convey.

Miss Hitch has her personal testimony on her Web site. (http://www.averyehitch.com/) You will find her books available there. Put these books on your Christmas list for all the young ladies in your life. They would also be a great choice for reading aloud with your family as those long winter evenings approach.
