It is that time of the year when we are again faced with coming up with new ideas for Christmas gift-giving. One can never go wrong with giving good books. For the young ones on the list (10 and up) one can do no better than the metaphorical series, The Terrestria Chronicles
, by Ed Dunlop. This series of seven easy-to-read, fast-paced books are allegories depicting a young medieval lad on his journey beginning with his for seeking salvation to reaching his final destination, “The Golden City.”
Each book chronicles facets of the life of Prince Josiah as he labors for the King. In the first book, The Sword, the King and the Parchment
, Josiah, like any new Christian has much to learn about his regenerated life and the war that has been raging through eons of time between the King’s followers and Argamor. (Just the name gives a gruesome picture of this character.)
All aspects of a Christian’s journey here on earth are seen in the characters and situations Josiah encounters in each book. Even the names of the books have allegorical meanings. Book Two: The Quest for Seven Castles
(Virtue, Knowledge, Temperance, Patience, Godliness, Brotherly Kindness, and Charity); Book Three: The Search for Everyman
( Importance of sharing the message of God’s forgiveness); Book Four: The Crown of Kuros
(A picture of the King’s reign in one’s heart.); Book Five: The Dragon’s Egg
(Challenges the reader to guard his or her heart for the King.); Book Six: The Golden Lamps
( Reveals the danger of things such as, prosperity and status, that can lure us away from the King’s business.); Book Seven: The Great War
( Final episode ending in a picture of what awaits those who are truly saved.) Together these books weave a colorful tapestry of the joys, sorrows and victories found in a true Christian’s life.
What a wonderful way to teach our children the character traits we try to instill in them and the ones we want them to shun by putting faces to them: Lord Watchful, Sir Faithful, Encouragement, Serpent of Selfishness, Giant of Fear, Lady Prudence, Lord Careless, The Little Sins (Envy, Gluttony, Pride, Apathy, Greed) to name just a few of the many identified throughout.
These books are a must for all Christian homes. Say no to the movies and video games this Christmas and give a gift that the entire family will enjoy as you gather together for devotions or bedtime stories. Allow grand castles, valiant knights, glorious quests and ferocious dragons to create an atmosphere where things with heavenly importance can be discussed.
These exciting books are reminiscent of Pilgrim’s Progress but easier to understand. Mom and Dad will find themselves devouring the pages of these hard to put down books.
Happy Reading!

Great recommendation! We read one or two of these for family devotions, and then our girls were too impatient to wait to hear the rest of the series -- they forged ahead and read them on their own. The investment was worth every penny.
I also suggest The Methuselah Chronicles, by Terry Lee Hamilton.
Sounds wonderful! Thank you for the time you put into sharing these reviews with us. Dianne C.
You must read these books! You will be encouraged, brought to tears and find yourself sitting on the edge of your seat. They are not just for kids! Every Christian home should have these and read them with your kids! Seriously...these are WONDERFUL books for the whole family!
Early on in deputation we received the Terrestrial Series from a Pastor's wife. They are exceptionally written; our whole family enjoys them. While we drove for long hours on the road, I usually read them out loud to pass the time. We also found that they taught good character attributes our boys could learn from. We have recommended these books to many others during our 2 years on the road. Shawn just finished the last book since being here. They are a great gift idea! Camille Elam
